Cyndi Turner and Craig James are co-presenting on Thursday from 4-5:30 on Practicing Alcohol Moderation: Abstinence is Not the Only Way. This is a 1.5 Contact Hour Session. The NASW standards for practice concur with the DSM-5 that substance use is not an either/or phenomenon, should be viewed on a continuum, and that a harm reduction approach is consistent with self-determination and meeting the client where the client is. However, the traditional recommendation for all drinkers experiencing problems remains admitting that they are “alcoholics” who must quit drinking forever. There are over 50 years of research that prove that harm reduction strategy of alcohol moderation is a more effective treatment option. Attendees will be able to differentiate four types of drinkers, predict who is a candidate for alcohol moderation with the Alcohol Moderation Assessment, and develop a Moderate Drinking Plan using moderation tools for the 90 million people who struggle with alcohol misuse.
